- The 15-year contract is valued at 265 million euros.
- The facility will be equipped with renewable energy generation and will be adapted to the risks derived from climate change.
Urbaser, a global environmental management company, increases its international expansion with the award of a new contract on the island of Thilafushi, Maldives. With this new contract, Urbaser consolidates its international presence, now operating in 25 countries.

WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANT ON THILAFUSHI ISLAND, MALDIVES
Thilafushi Island is located adjacent to the capital, Malé. The Greater Malé area and its 32 nearby islands, which are home to 86 tourist resorts, suffer from severe environmental pollution and deteriorating living conditions due to inadequate waste collection and uncontrolled dumping. Some 830 tpd of solid waste is generated in this area and dumped or burned in the existing 10-hectare landfill on Thilafushi Island.
The award to Urbaser of the project for the design, construction and operation of the waste-to-energy plant in Thilafushi, Maldives, will have a concession period of 15 years. This facility has a management capacity of 500 tons of waste per day, a 13 MW electricity production facility, a slag recycling plant, a control system for the gases emitted and a landfill for the disposal of waste generated in the process.
Furthermore, in its commitment to solutions that favor clean energy generation and the fight against climate change, Urbaser presents a facility that will produce renewable energy to address the islands’ land and electricity availability constraints, and will be sized to respond to disasters and climate change threats, such as rising sea levels.
The Maldives joins the long list of countries that have been part of Urbaser’s international expansion over the past 10 years, the keys to which have been the company’s extensive experience in the field of waste management, along with its commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development.
